Zenzera™ Lemon Balm: Calm, Focus, and Why We Use It

Lemon balm is a herb from the mint family, formally known as Melissa officinalis. It gets its name from the soft citrus scent released by its leaves, which have been used for centuries in food, teas, and traditional herbal preparations. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region as well as Central Asia and is recognised as a food and medicinal plant. [1]

Zenzera™ is a specific extract of lemon balm. It is made from lemon balm leaves and standardised for key plant compounds, including rosmarinic acid and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives. [2]

The main reason we use Zenzera™ lemon balm is its relationship with calm, focus, and mental performance under pressure. Lemon balm appears to interact with GABA, one of the brain’s main calming neurotransmitter systems. GABA helps quieten excessive nervous-system activity, which is one reason lemon balm has long been associated with a calmer state of mind. Laboratory research suggests that compounds in lemon balm, including rosmarinic acid, may influence this pathway by interacting with GABA transaminase, an enzyme involved in breaking GABA down. [3]

What makes Zenzera™ especially interesting is that it has been studied in people during mentally demanding tasks. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, healthy adults experiencing moderate stress took 300mg of Zenzera™ or placebo before completing demanding cognitive tests across the day. The results suggested that Zenzera™ helped support performance on harder executive-function tasks, particularly later in the day when fatigue was more likely to set in. It also helped restore feelings of calmness after periods of cognitive demand. [4]

For women, this is relevant because the challenge is rarely just “stress” in isolation. Through peri-menopause, menopause, and beyond, many women describe feeling pulled between poor sleep, high responsibility, mental load, changes in mood, and the need to stay sharp at work and at home. Research also suggests that psychological complaints, perceived stress, anxiety, low mood, and poor memory can cluster across the menopausal transition, particularly in early perimenopause. [5]

That is why we at Creatonics include 300mg of Zenzera™ lemon balm in our Day formula. It sits alongside creatine and our other key micronutrients as part of a formula designed not just for physical strength, but for the wider picture of female vitality: calm energy, cognitive sharpness, and feeling more capable in your own body.
